WRI is seeking conservation-minded NWCG-qualified leaders. The ideal candidate will have a passion for conservation and for Rx fire. He or she will enjoy mentoring less experienced fire professionals and will understand the importance of exemplifying high reliability principles. These are leadership positions and require leadership experience.
Job Description Summary
WRI plans to field two seasonal Fire Modules in 2019. Module staffing will include one Module Leader (SRB), one Assistant Leader (FFT1), and two to four FFT2s.
The modules will be designated as the Southern Blue Ridge Module and the Virginia Allegheny Highlands Module.
Each Module Leader oversees the day to day functioning of the respective Module. He/she contributes to the success of the organization by inspiring the Module to operate with high reliability, implementing superlative fire and stewardship projects, collaborating successfully with many partners, keeping within budget, capably executing administrative duties, and finding new opportunities to increase WRI’s impact.
General Position Information
Southern Blue Ridge Module – 1 position
Seasonal: 13-14 weeks (Includes pre-season training week)
Start & End Date: Mid-January to Mid-April, 2018 (Exact dates TBA)
Virginia Allegheny Highlands Module – 1 position
Seasonal: 13-14 weeks (Includes pre-season training week)
Start & End Dates: Mid-February to Mid-May, 2018 (Exact dates TBA)
Southern Blue Ridge Module: Based near Hiawassee, GA, and working in both Georgia & South Carolina, primarily serving the Chattahoochee-Oconee and the Sumter National Forests.
Virginia Allegheny Highlands Module: Based near Hot Springs, VA, and primarily serving the George Washington and Jefferson National Forests.
Essential Results-Based Duties
- Lead a four to six-member Fire Module, which will operate as part of a greater inter-agency team in a dynamic environment, working with varying partners and overhead depending on the work site and project.
- Maintain consistent contact with WRI HQ.
- Exemplify High Reliability Organizing principles, and commitment to excellent conservation and operational outcomes.
- Assure that WRI vehicles and equipment are maintained in a fire-ready status. Use power equipment and hand tools to improve firebreaks and conduct prescribed burns.
- Supervise and mentor team members.
- Ensure safe and appropriate use of tools and equipment.
- Communicate professionally and productively with WRI HQ, fellow Module members, partner organizations, public officials, media, and the public.
- Retain records and maintain organized hard copy and electronic files.
- Responsibly use a WRI credit card for supply ordering and travel purposes.
Manage Information and Materials
- Retain records and maintain organized hard copy and electronic files as needed.
- Keep travel and supply spending within budgetary constraints in coordination with WRI’s President/FMO.
Represent WRI Internally and Externally
- Develop and maintain positive and productive relationships with existing and potential partners.
- Communicate professionally and productively with WRI colleagues, partner organizations, public officials, media, and the public.
- Meet the National Wildland Coordinating Group qualifications and standards for Single Resource Boss: Engine Boss, Crew Boss, and/or Firing Boss.
- Bachelor’s degree or greater in natural sciences, natural resource management, or a related field preferred.
- At least 5 years’ experience in wildland fire, prescribed fire, or land management.
- Ability to work both independently and as part of a team.
- Ability to effectively communicate with and lead colleagues, consistently exemplifying commitment to High Reliability Organizing principles.
- Ability and willingness to perform difficult physical work for extended and irregular periods, under adverse conditions and in various extremes of weather. Excellent physical conditioning and the ability to complete a standardized 3-mile fitness test carrying a 45-pound pack while walking on flat terrain in less than 45 minutes.
- Ability to safely, effectively, and efficiently use and maintain common wildland fire hand tools, brush-cutters, leaf blowers, chainsaws, pumps/hose-lays, wildland fire type three, six, and seven engines, ATVs/UTVs, and other standard wildland fire equipment.
- Strong organizational skills applied to operational planning, vehicle and equipment maintenance, payroll reporting, and record retention.
- Demonstrated basic proficiency with email, word processing, and spreadsheet software, and Global Positioning System technology.
- Valid state or international driver’s license and the ability to operate four-wheel drive vehicles while towing a trailer.
- Experience and willingness to live in rustic conditions or camp for extended periods.
- Ability and willingness to travel frequently and on short notice for extended periods.
- Clean driving record.
- Faller 2 qualification and ATV/UTV certification preferred.
- Mechanical experience, i.e. troubleshooting and repairing trucks, UTVs, small engines, electrical wiring, etc.
- First Responder, EMT, or Wilderness EMT certification.
